Shed - Repair or Replace ?
Your shed needs some care and you are weighing up the options and replacing the whole thing is looking like the preferred option. Will it end up being more economic though...In my opinion in 9 out of 10 cases a repair will be a better solution unless the shed is in a real state of disrepair.
These are the factors to consider
- New sheds are expensive especially when replacing with like for like quality
- Your old one will need to be dismantled
- The waste will need to be disposed of which you may have to pay for
- What will you do with the contents during the changeover
- Remedial works to the now exposed base before assembly of new
- Assembly of new
- Quality of roof felt
1. Quite simply new sheds are not cheap, if your shed is quite old a new is unlikely to have the same quality unless you start spending more money. Why? - Timber used to be cheaper so companies weren't driven to continually make savings with this product by using thinner/smaller sections.
2. Something needs to happen to your old shed, this could be a fair amount of dismantling and it can be messy with all of those nails and wood.
3. What will happen to the pile of wood and old felt that you now have, do you hire a small skip or hippobag or make a few trips to your local recycling centre?
4. One of the aspects that is often overlooked is what will happen to the contents whilst you make the swap over from old to new ? Logistically the job has to be well planned to ensure that the new is there before the old is taken down, the contents can be taken out and stored somewhere that will not hinder the dismantling of old and assembly of new.
5. Before you assemble the new you need to check that your existing base is flat and level. More often that not they have shifted slowly with time and your old shed has moved gradually with the new shape. The new shed will not be as forgiving and will be very difficult to assemble if the base is not level and will most likely result in the door not shutting at the end of the assembly.
6. You will then have to fully assemble your new shed
7. The final consideration is that a roof repair will most likely be done with a higher grade felt than the basic felt that is supplied with most sheds. Some companies do offer an upgrade from their standard felt but this will cost more money. If you are buying new I would look to upgrade their felt for a longer lasting finish.
When all of these costs are added up a re-felt and minor repairs could be cheaper
